Testing Rogator G3plus surveys

SurveyTester reads Rogator G3plus surveys natively: every page, matrices, double matrices, sliders, number and date fields and the end page.

Published 4 min read .md

Rogator G3plus is a dedicated survey system in SurveyTester. A project set to Rogator (or to Automatic) recognises a Rogator survey the moment the browser extension opens it: the language selection, the welcome page, every page with its questions, answer options, matrix rows and text fields, and the thank-you page. From there everything else in SurveyTester works as usual - Auto Answer, Auto Complete, SurveyBots, test cases, issues and the Pages & Routing overview.

What a Rogator survey looks like to a tester

Rogator G3plus is the survey software of Rogator AG. A survey link points to a project folder such as https://research1.rogsurvey.de/data/<account>/<project>/; it forwards to the survey itself at https://<server>.rogsurvey.de/html/survey.htm. Every page is a classic web page: the respondent answers, clicks Next (in German surveys Weiter) and the server sends the next page. Before it does, the page checks the answers and shows a "Ausfüllhinweis" box if something is missing.

Why this is hard to test without SurveyTester

  • Many layouts for the same question. Depending on the Rogator version and the layout, a matrix is drawn with radio buttons, with pictures, as caption buttons for phones, as an accordion or as a carousel. SurveyTester reads all of them the same way.
  • Rotated answers. Rogator often shows options and matrix rows in a different order for every respondent. SurveyTester names them by their position in the questionnaire, so answers stay comparable across runs.
  • Rules hidden in the page. Minimum and maximum answers, exclusive options, number ranges and date formats are kept in the page's hidden fields. SurveyTester reads them and answers within them.
  • Survey links that only work as a link. A Rogator survey address opened directly shows only the server's welcome page; the survey starts from the project link. Use the project link in SurveyTester.

Supported question types

Rogator question typeHow SurveyTester records it
Single choiceOne option is chosen.
Multiple choice, with minimum, maximum and exclusive optionsSeveral options are ticked within the limits; an exclusive option is ticked alone.
Option with a text field, number field or dropdownThe option and its field are recorded together.

Multi-matrix (several choices per row), with a dropdown per rowEvery row gets its ticks and its dropdown answer.
Double matrix (two scales side by side)Each scale is recorded as a matrix of its own.
Open text, number, e-mail and date fieldsA fitting text, a number within the allowed range, an e-mail address or a date in the required format is entered.

SliderEvery slider is set to a value on its scale.
NPS (0 to 10 tiles or slider)One value from 0 to 10 is chosen.
Language selectionOne language is chosen.

Welcome page, errors and end page

  • Welcome and text pages. Pages with text only are recorded as information pages with nothing to answer.
  • Error messages. When the page refuses to move on, the text of Rogator's "Ausfüllhinweis" box is stored as the error of the page and of the question it marks.
  • End page. The thank-you page is recorded as the last step of the run. Complete, screenout and quota outcomes are configured as for any other survey system, with survey end page identifiers on the project. See Survey end pages.

Step by step

  1. Create the project. Choose Rogator as the survey system, or leave it at Automatic - the survey is recognised either way. Paste the survey's project link (.../data/<account>/<project>/).
  2. Start a test run from the project with the SurveyTester browser extension, or let SurveyBots run the survey. The SurveyTester bar appears above it, and the first page is recorded as step 1.
  3. Answer the survey by hand, or press Auto Answer and Auto Next to let SurveyTester fill the page and move on. Each page creates the next step.
  4. Check the result on the Pages & Routing page: every page appears with its questions, every question with its answer options, rows and scale points.

Good to know

  • Question names. Rogator numbers the questions of a questionnaire; SurveyTester names them Q1, Q2, ... in the same order. Matrix rows carry the row's position in the questionnaire (Q3_2), the two scales of a double matrix are Q7_S1 and Q7_S2. Answer values are the options' positions in the questionnaire; matrix columns count from 1.
  • Custom layouts. Some surveys use their own interactive designs (product shelves, drag-and-drop boards, card sorting). SurveyTester records their fields, but may not be able to answer them automatically.
  • Support is new. Rogator support was built on Rogator's public demo surveys. Question types the demos do not contain may not be answered automatically yet. If you find a page that SurveyTester does not read correctly, please send it to us.
